Selective Mutism is a anxiety disorder triggered in certain social situations, at home or around people they know. It is when they are unable to speak due to an expectancy to talk which triggers a freeze response. It usually starts during childhood, and if left untreated can persist into adulthood.
The signs are usually visible around the ages 2-4 and these can include lack of eye contact, stiffness speaking to others and anger alongside other features. There are different ways to try and help people with Selective Mutism including the sliding in technique and the talking map, with both in more detail in this course.
