This online COSHH training for childcare staff has been developed specifically for nursery and early years environments, where hazardous substances are more common than many people realise — from cleaning products and disinfectants to craft materials. Crucially, these substances can affect anyone in the workplace, not just the staff who handle them regularly.

For your setting, that means COSHH awareness is a whole-team matter. This Level 2 course gives staff a clear understanding of the health risks of working with hazardous substances, shows them how to carry out a COSHH assessment by identifying risks and the control measures needed, and ensures everyone knows how to work safely day to day.

What you’ll learn

  • What hazardous substances are and the health risks of over-exposure
  • The COSHH regulations and what they mean in practice
  • Where to find guidance and further information
  • How to carry out COSHH assessments and produce action plans
  • Adequate control: understanding limits and the principles of good control practice
  • The hierarchy of control and the reliability of different control measures
  • How to reduce exposure through process change and substitution
  • How to choose the correct personal protective equipment (PPE)

Who this course is for

All childcare and nursery staff who use, handle or may be exposed to hazardous substances at work. Because exposure is not limited to those who handle substances directly, the course is a sensible addition to induction and refresher training across your whole team.

Why this training matters

The COSHH regulations govern how workplaces must control substances hazardous to health, and this course translates those requirements into everyday nursery practice. Staff who can identify risks, apply the hierarchy of control and choose the right PPE protect themselves, their colleagues and — most importantly — the children in their care. A certificated record of COSHH training also gives your setting evidence for compliance and audit.

How the course works

The course is delivered entirely online through media-rich learning with voiceovers, so staff can complete it at their own pace, on any device, around the demands of the nursery day. It takes approximately two hours to complete, and the assessment and action-planning skills it teaches can be applied in your setting immediately.

Your certificate

On successful completion you will receive the COSHH (Level 2) course completion certificate, which can be used as evidence for compliance and audit and towards your continuing professional development (CPD). National Nursery Training is an NFAQ-accredited provider, so your certificate carries recognised accreditation for your setting’s training records.
