Practitioner Mental Health and Wellbeing at Work

Wellbeing training for early years staff: recognising burnout, realistic self-care and team wellbeing culture.

About 45 minutes

Early years work is rewarding and it is demanding. Long days on your feet, constant emotional attention to young children, paperwork in the evening and staffing pressures all take a toll. This course helps practitioners notice stress and burnout early, look after themselves in ways that fit real nursery life, and build a team where wellbeing is taken seriously.

It is compassionate and practical rather than preachy. It will not pretend the pressures of the sector away, and it is clear that it is not a substitute for professional help. The final lesson sets out exactly where to turn.

Why staff wellbeing matters

Young children borrow calm from the adults around them. When a child is frightened or overwhelmed, they read their key person’s face, voice and body language. A tense, exhausted adult, however skilled, finds that steadiness much harder to offer. When practitioners are chronically stressed, interactions become shorter and flatter, patience wears thin, observation turns into box-ticking, and sickness and turnover break the key person relationships children depend on. None of this happens because people stop caring. Care is emotionally expensive.

Wellbeing is also a safeguarding issue. Tired, preoccupied adults are more likely to miss a change in a child’s demeanour or a hazard in the room. This is one reason the EYFS makes staff supervision a statutory requirement, and the course shows how supervision should ask about coping and workload, not just children’s progress.

Frequently asked questions

Is this course a replacement for counselling or medical help?

No. The course supports your wellbeing, but it is not a diagnostic tool and not a substitute for professional help. It explains when to seek that help and where to find it.

What is the difference between stress and burnout?

Stress is what happens when demands consistently outstrip your resources with no real recovery in between. Burnout can follow when that overload goes on too long, and shows as emotional exhaustion, detachment from the children and families you care for, and feeling you make no difference.

Is this only for managers?

No. Most of the course is for every practitioner, covering your own wellbeing and how to support colleagues. One lesson sets out what managers and room leaders must own, such as supervision, modelling healthy habits and fixing structural causes of stress.

What if I recognise myself in the warning signs?

Tell someone. Your GP, NHS talking therapies, the Education Support helpline and your manager are all good places to start. If you have thoughts of suicide or self-harm, call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, or call Samaritans free on 116 123 at any hour.

What happens if I don’t pass the assessment?

You can resit it as many times as you need until you pass. Your certificate is issued as soon as you reach the 80% pass mark.
